RE 40+ & resumes:

$0.02 from a 60+ guy with 35 years programming and LanAdmin/SysAdmin
experience who recently went through the find-a-job exercise. Compressing
30+ years of experience into 1.5 pages is very different from stretching 3
years experience to look like ten so you can fill up those 1.5 pages and
calls for a totally different approach to the resume. I arranged mine by
category--Sys/LanAdmin, OS-es, languages, teaching, awards, etc. and
compressed the heck out of it. I also had some excellent help from one of
the folks in the outplacement firm. I also constantly revised--"Do you have
any background in _____?" Hmmmm, some, but not as much as some other
things--guess I'd better mention it too. I also tried to use the TLAs and
hot-button buzzwords as much as possible, on advice from several people.
Must've done something right--I found a good job!

FWIW, most technical people are NOT wordsmiths--get competent help on the
wording, etc. of your resume--it's worth it!

I do not think you should lie, but leaving out irrelevant
information and shortening the resume makes sense.
Someone told me a resume should catch an eye in the
first paragraph and fit on one page. I personally
know managers who move 3 page resume at the bottom of
the pile so they do not have to read it right now.

BTW good article about getting jobs and negotiating
the terms of employment:

Anthony,

Does that mean we should lie, leave out, etc?

As a recruiter I do work with people that are 40+ in years. If I have one
suggestion to people who fall into that category(40+) it would be to only
list what you've done in the last 5 to 6 years. What disqualifies many of
my 40+ candidates is a resume that has 15 to 20+ years experience working
with computers.

So far my organization hasn't identified any qualified candidates to fill
the Linux programmer position. I guess I'm throwing my fishing pole into
the lake to see if anyone will bite. I appreciate your suggestions that
have been listed, and any future suggestions that you may have. Please feel
free to call me if anyone has a few minutes to talk to help me out.
