gnome and kde

I have full mouse capability, so I can click on the box, and that's about
it. I can also use the mouse to select the Gnome session, or to iconify the
prompt, or to select the reboot.

Is the cursor in the login box?  Seems to me I remember that if its not, 
you cant type anything
