We have had a few questions related to networking devices on newer systems.
Either the wireless card or ethernet card are not working.
This problem is related to the kernel version on BT5r3.
To troubleshoot:
ifconfig -a
or
iwconfig
Restart the daemon:
/etc/init.d/network-manager stop (then start)
/etc/init.d/wicd start (if you are using WICD
look at the output of starting:
dmesg
Check the configuration:
vi /etc/network/interfaces
Look at your kernel drivers and devices:
lspci -nn | grep Eth
or
lshw -C network
modprobe
Ubuntu comes with Wireless disabled by default:
*Also Fn+F11 toggles the wireless*
*VERIFY your Hardware SWITCH is ON*
If restarting the daemon, verifying cabling, and adding device to the
interfaces file all fail. You are going to have to verify the drivers that
are in place or install the firmware (example for ralink):
apt-get install firmware-ralink
Update or rollback your kernel:
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.35-24-generi
sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-2.6.35-23-generi
uname -a
To google: BT5r3 runs on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) LTS
Therefore all of your search research must be related to Lucid.
For instance look at "ubuntu 10.04 $device name from lspci $your hardware
manufacturer and model number
Example for Sony Vaio:

Wireless for Sony atheros build and install your own kernel:

Example for ASUS:

We hope this helps!
