Unfortunately, APC can be difficult to talk to with Linux. Some of them have a serial port (with a weird pin out), some can talk to the APC Windows program.
My experience was, I gave up on APC and went with a Linux friendly company. Probably doesn't help you, sorry!
You can try apcupsd and see if it works for you. Apparently it can talk over USB, if you can connect to the UPS with USB.
