How to get wine installed and working?

I think I have 'wine' installed via synaptic
but I am unable to find how to start and run it.

Synaptic shows a long list of packages, a few
of which show as being installed. But how can
one download the list of files that display
when one does a search for 'wine' and the long
list displays? CTRL "A" highlights everything,
but I cannot copy what is listed.
