I think USB 3 --> SATA is much slower than connecting directly to the motherboard, but an SSD connected this way is still faster than a 7200rpm HDD. I would buy any internal (e.g. TeamGroup) 2.5" SSD and connect it sata to USB and then you basically have a regular flash drive but much bigger. Format NTFS for regular windows flash drive or ext4 if you're just using on Linux 🤷‍♂️. I have found if you don't properly unmount NTFS, that tends to corrupt things worse than others
