RAM question

Oddly, I find old ram (like ddr2) tends to be more expensive than new ram
(ala ddr4) simply because it's harder to find, or isn't produced as much as
current ram (supply/demand). I've always found this true at Fry's in
particular, though I haven't bought anything there in a good 10-15+ years.
The brand of the ram is mostly irrelevant, look at who makes the actual
chips on the ram. Samsung or hynix is what I typically find in my servers
and haven't had ram problems in years. I avoid Crucial anymore, everything
I've bought from them dies.
I've had pretty good luck buying ram off ebay... When I loaded up my
current box with 128gb of ram, buying ecc ddr3 server ram was stupid
expensive new, but found plenty of old Cisco UCS server memory at a real
good price, even made an offer to beat them down some more, getting 16gb
sticks for around ~$56ea. All worked, none have failed in ~2yr or so now.
Non-server might be a bit more sketchy, but as long as it's coming from an
e-recycler or a real business, should be ok.
There was a thread a bit ago about local e-recyclers, I'd start there too
as it's probably sitting on a shelf in a pile collecting dust.
