Software defined radio?

Hi all,

Since we're on the subject of radio, has anybody gotten Software
Defined Radio (SDR) working to the extent that you can receive
Shortwave broadcast transmissions or AM Radio 520-1710khz?

I'm not interested in transmitting.

I'd like to get something like that running, so I need to decide on
both hardware and software, and it would be nice to follow in
somebody's footsteps.
