Michael,
About the SD card:
The Raspberry is not the fastest processor but it's still a
bunch faster than the SD card.  So it's best to get the
fastest SD card you can afford, at least a 16GB card.

You may have an older version, but my raspberry mod 2
had no trouble loading the raspberry version of debian that
was available over a year ago.  It is running an 8GB
SanDisk Ultra 30MB/s 6 HC I.  I loaded XBMC on it with
no complaints.   Of course you probably have a newer
version of the Pi and the software.

If I had to change anything, I would try to use the fastest
SD Card I could afford, preferable the kind used in the
new high-end cameras.  Also, the one with the most
storage I could afford, but the priority is speed over
storage size.

The other thing is that open source development can
sometimes be frustrating (like I can't install batctl on
my linux box right now) so just keep trying.  But just
once or twice a day because you know the developers
probably won't upload updates to the mirrors more
than once a day.
