For reasons I can't contemplate, most of my drives last more than three
years. I buy mostly WD, but a few Hitachis too. I don't buy Seagate
because I've heard too much bad stuff about them.
Back in the day I bought a couple IBM Deathstars: They were great drives
until they broke, usually in about a year.
Compared to my experiences with laptops, especially physical problems
with laptops, my experiences with hard drives have been quite
satisfying.
But I know I'm in the minority, and the only thing I can figure is I
always make sure my case is well ventilated, and I often use hard drive
fans/heatsinks.
