MySql max_allowed_packet

Amit,
Your commands seem to have worked - thank you!!
Do I need to set :
1) global net_buffer_length=1000000;
2) global max_allowed_packet=10000000000000;
to some lesser value?
Any way it is detrimental to leave at these values as set?
