Can't get HDMI output working properly in Linux Mint

It sounds like your computer set the TV up as a second monitor that is
most likely setup light next to laptop's screen. Just try and drag a
windows to each edge of the screen and see if it moves over to the TV.
I'm guessing you are running KDE because I believe Unity puts a menu bar
on every screen, like it or not (I'm firmly in the not category). If
you are and you would like your screens to show the same thing go to
System Settings -> Display and monitor. Then make sure the "Display
Configuration" section is selected. You should be seeing rectangles
that represent your monitors. Simply drag one of the monitors on top of
the other. You might need to change the resolution of one of the
display so that they match.
Alternatively you can just start a movie and drag the movie's window
onto the empty desktop and then make it full screen. This is my
preferred method for watching movies via laptop while on the road.
