Slackware vs Kubuntu

You might try installing the net yet released kubuntu 13.10 on it.  It's 
got the 3.11 kernel in it that might have fixed whatever is causing the 
lockups.
I've been running it on a Lenovo T60 for a few weeks with no problems at 
all.
