Why is Firefox so slow? How to speed it up?

I have not been a fan of the bleeding edge of FF so i have dropped back to
FF ESR which is a much more stable release cycle. but in general it has
been rather quick, but i know plug ins, add ins, and scripts on the page
can cause issues.
