HELP: My System Died After an Update/Upgrade

Brian,
Thanks for the suggestions.
I ran 'aptitude upgrade', not dist-upgrade. However, I did try 'aptitude
upgrade' at the command line, and the result showed that the update
completed without errors.
I am running Ubuntu, but Debian testing.
