It's also features.

Programs "back then" would be strictly command line, with ugly options and
would spit out barely formated pages of numbers as the result. The user
still had to do a lot of the "processing" to know what to put in the
program and what the output even meant. A whole lot of the code in programs
now is for making the interface and output more efficient and usable. The
amount of code that makes it possible to click a "Send" button with a mouse
is way more than you imagine but we don't have to worry about it because we
have oodles of ram and GHz.
