gnuradio, sdr, DAB USB dongles, and so forth?

Guilty as charged J
On some of the web pages there are comments about bypassing your power
at the dongle, and about using shielded USB cables.
Monoprice has a cute little USB extender that lets you use etherhose to
extend USB to huge distances (1000' I think - compared to the what, 30'
or less that the USB spec says you can push it to?). I happen to have
one of those, and had considered using that to put the dongle a couple
of hundred feet away...
But first, I have to get it to work! J

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'm guessing you're a ham. I've
never encountered anyone not a ham who uses terms as narrowband fm or
wideband fm, psk and so on. The only problem I could think of would be
the computer generating interference with whatever you're trying to
receive.

Actually, the software on your pc turns off the decoder in the
dongle and takes I and Q directly, then decodes it on the PC.
Probably won't work for TV reception here (besides, the
bandwidth you get that way is 'only' about 2MHz wide), but NBFM, WBFM,
AM, PSK, FSK, blah blah blah can all be decoded if they run in under
2MHz bandwidth.

Sounds interesting, but if it won't work with U.S. digital tv,
how would you test it? Wouldn't it only be useful overseas?

So, has anyone here been playing with SDR?
Specifically I am thinking of using one of those USB TV
receivers (from overseas - they work with DAB or DVB+T which isn't our
standard over here in the states) and either gnuradio or something else.
There was an article in QST (a ham radio magazine)
'recently' about it, so I rushed out and bought one of the USB thingys
and now I'm trying to get all the pieces in the right place. I've tried
SDR#, gnuradio-companion, and probably a few other things. The controls
for SDR# don't seem to work for me, and also I don't seem to be able to
get the receiver and the software tied together.
Is anyone else playing with this?
