That's bad...
That suggests that the drive doesn't trigger udev, which most likely means
that is damaged, but a 'pull without mounting' would not do that, so:
BEFORE PLUGING IN THE DRIVE:
lsusb > /tmp/lsusb-b4.txt
AFTER PLUGING IN THE DRIVE:
lsusb > /tmp/lsusb-af.txt
sdiff -s /tmp/lsusb-b4.txt /tmp/lsusb-af.txt
If you see nothing, it's probably hosed...
