linux based network/shared drive

Samba can be a bit tricky, especially if you are trying to enforce user
access rights.  My favorite combination is:

  - Samba for share management & PDC

  - OpenLDAP for user management

  - Webmin to configure the server

  - GOsa to manage user access configuration
