Did you restart the SSH daemon?

ssh -L 2222:localhost:22 eric at e-server.loc

Does that work? Can you then ssh to port 2222 on your desktop?

ssh -p 2222 localhost

On e-server, can you telnet to port 4243?

telnet localhost 4243
