Some of use like to do it because is educational :-)

part of why we are here, we want to do what we want, not what others

No one qusetioned educational or telling what to do. 

However:

Time is money. 

Many IT persons are so maxed that to have an addtional project is burdening to them. They don't want anymore busy-ness.  If the cost and time ratio were drastically different I would say the cost factor was in favor of building a box. In this case I personally would go for something already set up, unless I just had and extra Mini-Itx lie-ing around. Minis avg 2x the cost. Pico avg 4x the cost of an ATX. A good commercial router/vpn is about in the middle of the two cost wise.
