"In Texas" != "In Austin, TX".  Austin's a reasonably big city, and really
cheap houses are all far out in the surrounding suburbs or in terrible
neighborhoods.

Austin is an island of relative sanity in the middle of Texas.  Part of this
is because the major employers are the state government, UT, and various tech
companies; it's not tied to the awl bidness and the boom-bust cycle there like
so much of the rest of TX is.  The influence of UT means that there are plenty
of people there who know there's a world outside of TX, which helps.  You
*will* still find people who live up to all the bad stereotypes of Texans. 
There are just fewer of them in Austin than in Dallas.  The local music
scene's really nice if you like that sort of thing.

Yes, I lived in Austin for 5 years, though it was a loooong time ago.
