computer broke

Okay... I fixed the desktop! I can now load it in 3.1.4. When I was
unpacking the kernel I was entering

     dpkg -i x y z

It liked:

     dpkg -i x
     dpkg -i y
     dpkg -i z

better than all on the same line.
But the laptop is another matter. I figured out how to boot into text mode
with the 3.1.4 kernel (recovery mode) but x won't start and I don't know
what to do. When I type sudo startx the screen just goes blank like it does
when I don't load in recovery mode.
