OpenCalais.com will generate tags for stuff - but maybe not like you want.

Have you looked at KnowledgeTree?  http://www.knowledgetree.org/Main_Page

I think the Gnome Tracker is meant to do the organizing, just without all that nice comfortable hierarchy.  http://projects.gnome.org/tracker/

Hello All,

I want a document manager application to replace Mariner's Paperless software for mac. It is the only piece of software that I have not found a replacement for.

The program adds meta tags to pdf files for organizing into categories. It also constructs the entire chronological directory tree in YYYY MM DD format.

www.marinersoftware.com has video tutorials that describe all the features of the software.

I would love hear of any alternatives that users are aware of.

Thanks,

Tom

I use gscan2pdf. You can then set it up to do OCR automatically. You can the save the file as djvu or pdf or image with the OCR text file attached. You can the use something like beagle and you can search for keywords and if they're in the text file it'll come back as a hit. The lastest ver of gascan2pdf will also save the location of the text so you can find the spot without having to hunt through the whole page. It doesn't really save in a hierarchy as I just did this myself with filenames and folders. It's also nice software for doing double sided scans with a sheet feeder. I'd be interested on seeing what else you come up with.
