One more thing to test the heat theory.  Remove the cover that gives you
access to the memory sticks.  Make sure both are in place and properly
seated.  Elevate the laptop (a pair of books or something but be sure the
memory opening is not covered.  Set up a small fan to blow into or across
that opening and then see if the machine can run long term.

If it can, the problem is definitely the heat and you can focus on the
problem that way.  Find ways to improve ventilation, improve radiation (e.g.
aluminum tape heat sink, etc.), or perhaps adjust voltages / clock speed if
your BIOS supports it to limit generated heat.

Unfortunately, the machine specs show a max of 1 GB with 2 slots so I think
you can bet a 1 GB stick will not work.
