Yes, I use ArchLinux. I'll have to get back to you with exact links
but Chris Branon has worked up a customized install image for
ArchLinux which talks with software speech and speakup kernel
modules. From that network based install image, you can then install
the various packages including GNOME. This distro is a lot like
Slackware but the dependency tracking is much better but you still get
to crawl under the hood like you do in Slackware. I've been using
this distro for over a year now.
