Fresh Ubuntu Installation - Events/0 consumes most of cpu

Yes, that would be true for any software whose goal is to avoid the need for
manual control. In my experience, almost all problems with Network Manager
have been because someone is attempting to use the old methods of manual
control. Certainly people do have problems with it, but for most systems I
have dealt with (and that is a lot) it seems to be pretty flawless.
That said, my first experience with it years ago was horrible until I found
a forum entry that told me to delete all the old manual control stuff from a
certain configuration file. From that day forward that system was fine
through a number of releases. I also used that technique to solve problems
for several other people back then. That should not be your problem since
yours was a new install. More likely is an updated driver being used that
lost some kind of support for older hardware. That seems to be not uncommon
unfortunately.
