Android phone and linux computer

Considering that Android *is* a Linux system, it should be as simple as plugging it in.
Some people confuse connecting a phone to transfer files (simple, should just work for ALL Android phones) with tethering, which is using the phone to provide Internet access to the computer (sort of like a 3G modem).
Tethering is not supported on all phones because the carriers don't like it (it reduces their revenue from selling you a second data plan just for computer access).
Transferring files between the phone and the computer is enabled on every Android phone I know of (and generally on iPhones, WebOS, WinMo, etc... as well).
