Just look in /usr/share/man/man1 you'll find tons of command line tools.
than type man firstpartoffilename to see the manual for that command.

Great list. I would also add scp (secure copy) ps aux (list of currently
running processes) and I also like any app that has a command line function,
like xmms.
While we are on the subject, excluding writing everything in bash, what is
the best way for various programs (pick your language) to access command
line tools and parse the output? I would like to crank my automation
techniques up a level.

Try this for a very basic list of commands. Sorry, it doesn't include such
things as writing
CDs or DVDs or downloading/upgrading programs or lots of things that can be
done with
the utilities that come with the standard desktop. Check out "Linux
Cookbook" by Carla
Schroder. Great book!

Hi all,
Every once in a while someone mentions that: "they use the command line
for that", where "that" means almost "anything". Example: someone just
mentioned that they use the command line for email. I was wondering if
people that use the command line a lot could list a few of the programs
they use and what they are used for. Example: Irssi: instant messenger
for irc channels. Thanks.
