#1 reason I would recommend Mac is that most of the time you don't have to
do the sysadmin stuff for the people that have those.
I haven't had any problems with DRM on Mac. True I am not doing a lot
of video
but audio has not been much of a problem.
I have to agree with your point of damage and theft; but durability?
From my experience Mac has been more durable than any other hardware I
have ever
owned.
On the other hand I am the one buying my hardware and I do take care of
it, so
it's hard for me to say how this kind of hardware would survivde a teenager.
Probably better then a netbook and definitely better then a Dell.
BTW, I find it a pretty bad practice to give junky hardware to anybody with
the assumption they will just trash it. I believe it is better to give
them quality
product with the lesson they should take good care of it because it is
something
special and they should take special attention to keep it pristine. But,
that's my
philosophy.
