I've never used backtrack, so this may be completely wrong here...
iwconfig should tell you your wireless interface and MAC just like
ifconfig does.
Another 2 cents here is that if you see the SSID dropping, the signal
might be too weak *OR* your wireless card isn't a very good one. (it
may be that these days your wireless card doesn't matter)
