Practically every distro these days asks for the root password when
switching into the single-user runlevel.  If they knew the root
password, they wouldn't need directions on how to reset a password.

> passwd
> reboot
> chkconfig ssh on

...chkconfig only works in Redhat and derived distros.  Also, the
script is almost always called "sshd".
