Just noticed one more item:
You should absolutely install a new copy of your favorite Linux Distro on the new machine, otherwise you'll have a system setup for the old hardware trying to run on the new hardware.
Copying just your home directory onto the new machine (assuming you use the same user name when you set it up) will effectively transfer all of your preferences and settings, since Linux stores all personal settings in your home directory.
