linux distro

Has anyone noticed a dramatic decrease in the number of viable desktop/laptop/netbook distros?  (And Chrome to rule them all.)

I have liked the Ubuntu for laptops/desktops. Id suggest trying 9.10
as it has a number of new features and very current hardware.
