OT: OS X Disk Utility vs Linux

The trick is that PCs (for the most part) run BIOS, new Macs run EFI.  It's
a completely different interface to HW.  I'm not sure if there's any duct
tape that can help you get back at your data (sounds like you've rebuild the
partition tables already anyhow) but here are a few references to EFI and
