iButton anyone?

You have an interesting gadget there Tim.
I have never heard of them before, but I did a Google search and it
looks like it can be nearly anything.

Alan was correct in saying that more information would be needed. 

The manufacturer says that the iButton is "a peripatetic extension of
the computer", a statement that says everything and nothing at the same
time. 

As a security device it is a key with a unique electronic number in it
that would serve to tell the system that that key, and only that key was
present in the system and was therefore authorized to do whatever teh
system was programmed to do.

On the other hand, depending on how it was programmed, it could be doing
nearly anything else the designer built into it.

Personally, I vote for its unlocking the front door, turning on the
coffee pot and starting World Wat III all at the same time, all of which
seem to be within its capability.
