Yes I use mutt along with other people. I tried using alpine but had a hard time
getting it to use procmail and maildir (using maildir and alpine requires a
patch) and it didn't have good GPG support, but all that is beside the point.
I'll post my .muttrc file here: http://kondor.6c.googlepages.com/dotfiles
I tried to comment it pretty well, and there are still a few hic-ups

I'm not sure if you know this but I don't want to assume anything. You'll need
to set up procmail and fetchmail/getmail. If you want to download the messages
to keep them locally and keep them on Gmail, you should probably use POP3 and
tell gmail to archive the copy once you've downloaded it. Ideally you could get
a shell account somewhere and have mutt running in a screen session. That way you
just ssh to the box and check your mail that way. Fetchmail was developed my Eric
Raymond and I don't see any paticular advantage with choosing it over getmail, I
also use mstmp for sending mail. To toggle back and forth from different
mailboxes use "c" (no quotes) then hit "?" to see the available directories,
then you can also hit "tab" to see the available accounts (using account hooks
and folder hooks). The mutt wiki is good, you can also ask questions here. In my
muttrc you'll see vim is the default editor and GPG is also setup.
