OT: accounting via spreadsheet

In thinking of using a spreadsheet I think of two things. 1) fexability 2) the cost in time of creating the spreadsheets, formulas etc.

Might be more cost effective to just buy quickbooks.

I'm fine with paying for software, but it still needs to be Free Software
and it still needs to use a free and open data format.

Are there accountants that support clients who use spreadsheets for the
source data?

In other words, could I obtain or create an OpenOffice.org template for
general personal and small business accounting that an accountant could
use?

If the accountant then imports the data to a proprietary program for
auditing I might be fine with that.
