hide files from unix FS in samba

I've got samba up and running in my network, and everything is going
great with one exception. I can't seem to get the 'hide files' directive
to work properly. I've got a share with some directories in it that I
don't want to be seen. I've already got the permissions setup on them so
they can't be accessed, but I don't even want them to be in view. The
problem is that these files will be accessible from a *nix based OS
(linux and mac systems) as well as my windows box. I want to make it so
that these directories are visible in a normal ls when I'm logged into
the server directly, but not when it's mounted over smb. I haven't
actually tested to see if the directories are hidden on a windows
system, but for my macs and linux machines, the only way to get those
folders out of view is to put a dot in front of them as is standard for
unix. I was wandering if there was another way to do this? Googling has
resulted in nothing but continued re-iterations of how to use the hide
files directive, which I've tried setting up as I've mentioned. Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.
