Dell's Latitude series are the proven workhorses of their lineup.

When you buy one, buy it as a SMALL BUSINESS CUSTOMER and GET the 
complete care and next biz day service.
With complete care, if you "accidentally" leave it on your car roof and 
the drive over it, they WILL replace it (provided you send all the 
pieces back to them. The next biz day service will get you a repair 
ONSITE by a tech within a couple biz days depending on when you call 
tech support to report the problem. You can get up to 5 yrs of warranty. 
They have EXCELLENT diagnostics tools. BUT, if you change the OS, they 
will NOT support the OS. You CAN get it with ubuntu installed though. 
One other thing. You can also get "computrace" that will help recover 
your baby should some heartless sob relieve you of it. Cool thing about 
it is. Once activated it CANNOT be turned off.... EVER.
