As for the question about what Google runs... I believe it's highly hacked, customized software, if not entirely custom for Google... Ah, here we go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_platform (Wikipedia) says that Google runs software called Google Web Server. I suspect it's Linux-based, or at least Linux compatible.
