(perhaps the long technology battle is 1/2 of my
problem)
I plugged in a USB drive and dd the internal drive to
a file on the external USB drive. It took 9 hours to
dd a 40 GB internal drive.
40 GB * 1024 MB/GB / (9 hrs * 60 min/hr * 60 sec/min)
= 40960 / 32400
= 1.2 MB/sec
I used USB2 hardware (this was a requirement on the
purchase), new drives, and a really new kernel with
USB2 support. Maybe this is a limitation with dd?
The external hard drive's light blinks alot and the
box seems I/O bound when I do it.
