You should be able to reassign the icon if you know where to find it.
So on the command line, do a 'which kmix' and the check that directory
for the icon.  If the applet is still on your panel but with the wrong
icon, right click, select properties and change the icon.  If it is
not still on the panel. right click the executable, add it to panel
and then do as above.
