Thunderbird lock files

Thanks to everyone for your assistance. My mail now is working sending and receiving and I am using Thunderbird to check it. But when it starts up I get the error "Unable to create lock file /var/spool/mail/joey.lock. For movemail to work it is nessary to create lock files in the mail spool directory. On many systems it is best accomplished by making the spool directory be mode 01777" So i execute chmod 01777 /var/spool/mail and this fixes the problem. But the next time I start Thunderbird I get the same response again from Thunderbird. It seems somehow the permissions are getting reset by Postfix or I have no idea. Can this be a distribution specific problem? I'm using Mandriva Powerpack 2007 on a 64 bit machine.
