memory card

I got a memory card for the digital camera and I got a memory card reader so I 
can put files onto the memory card aside from pictures. How do I activate it? 
It is not showing up in media nor does it seem able to be mounted. While it 
is true that I can download pictures through the camera it would be better to 
do it through the reader. Would someone be kind enough to help?
