Samba mangling method

I have searched google and found a million articles about the hash over-flow 
bug in the hash mangling method, but what exactley is this?
I'm having a problem logging in to a samba ldap machine and I'm just curious 
if the hash2 has something to do with it as I've never used it before and 
can't find it in any of my books...
