How long should KDE take to install?

Oh. Well I left it open today while I was at school (so for about 8 hours) and it's still at "preparing packages." Would it do the same thing if the screensaver came on?

Generally when you close the lid of a laptop it suspends all activities and writes the contents of memory to disk so it can pick up where you left off when you open the cover again. So, no, if you close the lid the laptop will stop operating. Also, the laptop vents exhaust heat through the keyboard so if it ran while the lid was closed it could overheat.

I'm running a fresh install of Xubuntu, and I wanted KDE as well as Xfce. So I devoted a workspace to synaptic and told it to install kubuntu-desktop.
Now here's the fun part: I did that 24 hours ago. It still says "Preparing Packages." WEIRD!!!!
Also: will Synaptic continue running if I close the laptop lid?
