AMD CPU/socket question

A friend's motherboard (not an ECS) is dying. He just bought it last
July and needs a replacement. Went to Fry's (\me dodging bullets) and
the ever-so-helpful mobo sales dude told me the only socket 939 mobos
they have are crap and they won't be getting any more in. I love his
candor.
The AM2 mobos stuff I've seen on the Internet leads me to believe the
AM2 socket will take a 939 CPU. Is this true? Since he has to replace
the board, he wants to buy something he can use today, and use tomorrow
when he can buy a dual core CPU.
The poor guy's computer got fried in the monsoons last year, and he had
to replace the PS and mobo (obviously), and the CPU/memory because he
could not get a 4 year old mobo for his Intel CPU. Now his new(ish)
mobo is dying and he's looking at a new mobo/CPU (and maybe memory)
again. I suggested an abit KN8 (bought one for my son for xmas and it
seems pretty nice).
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
