Restarting X should take care of it.
Very occassionally this happens to me as well. Whatever causes it, X
will get into a funky state and eat the CPU. Closing app the apps
doesn't help, but quitting X and starting up again does.
Depending on how you work and the distro you're using, restarting X may
be just as inconvenient for you as rebooting, only it will save a
little time.
