I know my sister has had trouble with the ones that Yahoo uses. To make things worse it is the exception to the rule if they reply in any way whatsoever to the email link provided for, "If you have trouble" with the captcha.
Having some sort of reasoning test seems better at first though, although I'm sure that's no less open to problems. Or a catch and release policy for spammers that released them into death valley.
